Swordfish Rigs

Swordfish heads are available in plastic and in lead.

Swordfishing is taking off in South Florida. Rigging squid is always a big question. There are lots of options out there but few are as easy, and look as good, as the Better Bait Systems swordfish rig. Use either circle or J hooks and place the hook wherever you want. We recommend placing the hook in the middle of the mantle. Tuck the head in and floss it tight to the mantle. The Better Bait head holds the top of the squid up even with a feisty sword tugging on the bait.

How to rig a swordfish squid

Align the hook with the body of the squid and place a single barrel crimp on the leader one and a half inches from the tip of the squid. Push the hook through the squid from top to bottom and pull hook eye into the squid.

Pin the better bait swordfish head into the top of the squid. Using a rigging needle and floss tie the squid to the head. We have found using a x pattern over the squid holds great.

Push the head of the squid into the mantle and floss into place using the needle.
